The Challenge: Speed vs. Complexity
For this project, I challenged myself to build a high-functioning, production-ready rig of BMO from Adventure Time within a strict 24-hour time limit. The goal was to prove that efficiency doesn't have to come at the cost of technical depth.
Rig Features & Technical Specs
Full 360° Turnaround: Despite the time constraint, the rig features a complete 360-degree rotation, ensuring BMO remains "on-model" from every conceivable camera angle.
The Master Controller "Brain": To make the rig animator-friendly, I implemented a robust Master Controller system:
Expression & Mouth Control: A dedicated MC to cycle through 13 mouth substitutions for lip-sync and varied emotional states.
Advanced Eye Logic: Integrated MCs for 3 eye substitutions per eye, plus a Grid Wizard setup for pixel-perfect pupil tracking.
Screen Message Toggle: A custom controller to switch the facial interface with 5 unique screen messages, mimicking BMO’s internal computer functions.
Deformer Systems: Utilized Curve Deformers across the arms, legs, and feet.
This allows for the classic "noodly" rubber-hose aesthetic of the show while maintaining the structural integrity of BMO’s rectangular body.
Drawing Substitutions: Organized a library of 13 mouths and specialized eye shapes to ensure the "personality" of the character is never lost during fast-paced animation.
Artist Reflection
Managing the node view for a 360-degree rig while setting up multiple Master Controllers in one day was a lesson in node hierarchy and organizational priority. The result is a lightweight, highly expressive rig that is ready for a professional animation pipeline.
